TIMOTHY MARTINEZ, DMD
Chief Dental Officer
Dr. Timothy Martinez graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1986 with a fifth-year concentration in Health Care Administration. Throughout his 30 year career, he has had extensive experience in FQHC’s dental programs, state dental Medicaid administration, private practice, and academic positions at the Associate Dean level.
Dr. Martinez first worked at a migrant FQHC in Laredo, Texas through the NHSC Loan Repayment program. He then worked as Dental Director for three large FQHC’s in the greater Boston area, including the first FQHC in the nation Geiger-Gibson Community Health Center, Boston Health Care for the Homeless, and the South End Community Health Center. From 1990 to 2002, Dr. Martinez was instrumental in expanding dental services to rural regions of Massachusetts on the Cape and Islands increasing access to care for Medicaid and uninsured residents. Due to the lack of affordable dental services in these areas, Dr. Martinez became the owner of two private practices and developed a hybrid model of oral health care that met the needs for all patients in demand for dental services.
From 2009 to 2017, Dr. Martinez went on to a dental education career facilitating the implementation and accreditation of two new dental schools, Western University of Health Sciences and the University of New England, that focused on graduating a new breed of dental providers who demonstrated humanistic and compassionate qualities. Dr. Martinez helped orchestrate an extensive network of community-based externship programs for senior students in California and the Northern New England states. As the Associate Dean for Community Partnerships and Access to Care for both of these Universities, Dr. Martinez afforded the opportunity for dental students to be exposed to FQHC’s, non-profit dental organizations, and private practices in dental designated shortage areas.
As Borrego Health’s Chief Dental Officer since 2017, Dr. Martinez has come full circle in his career working with the extensive FQHC dental operations, both contracted and in-house.
